Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. The ones that do should come out properly.
What it is
Wisdom teeth arrive late to a mouth that has usually run out of room. Some settle in perfectly well and need nothing; others cause repeated infection, decay in the tooth in front, or crowding pressure.
We assess with a radiograph, and where the roots sit close to the nerve in the lower jaw we take a 3D scan before deciding anything. That scan is what turns a risky extraction into a planned one, and it occasionally changes the recommendation altogether.
Where a tooth is symptom-free, well positioned and cleanable, the honest advice is usually to leave it alone and monitor. Where it is repeatedly infected or damaging its neighbour, removal under local anaesthetic — with sedation if you would prefer — is straightforward, and we will tell you plainly what the recovery involves.

Good To Know
- Do all wisdom teeth need removing?
- No. A wisdom tooth that is symptom-free, well positioned and cleanable is usually best left alone and monitored.
- How long is the recovery?
- Expect two to three days of swelling and soreness for a surgical extraction, less for a simple one. You will leave with a written aftercare plan and a number to call.
- Can I be sedated for it?
- Yes. Most extractions are done under local anaesthetic alone, but sedation is available and is worth discussing if the thought of it is what has kept you away.
