Rutherford Family Dental welcomes patients covered by the Canadian Dental Care Plan. Here is who qualifies, what the plan covers and how to book.
What it is
Federal dental coverage for uninsured Canadians
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a Government of Canada program that helps cover the cost of dental care for eligible residents who do not have access to dental insurance. It is administered by Sun Life on behalf of Health Canada.
If you are enrolled, you can use your coverage at Rutherford Family Dental. Let us know when you book and we will take care of the rest.
Who qualifies
- You do not have access to dental insurance through an employer, pension or a family member's plan.
- Your adjusted family net income is under $90,000.
- You are a resident of Canada for tax purposes.
- You (and your spouse or common-law partner, if you have one) filed a tax return for the previous year.
Using your CDCP coverage with us

Apply and enrol
Apply through the Government of Canada. Once approved, Sun Life — which administers the plan — sends your welcome package and member card.

Book with us
Call or book online and let us know you are covered by CDCP. Bring your member card and a piece of ID to your appointment.

Know your costs first
Before treatment we go through what the plan covers, what any co-payment would be, and anything that falls outside the plan — so there are no surprises.
What the plan covers
- Preventive care — cleanings, polishing, sealants and fluoride
- Diagnostic services — examinations and X-rays
- Restorative services — fillings
- Endodontic services — root canal treatment
- Prosthodontic services — complete and partial dentures
- Periodontal services — deep scaling
- Oral surgery — extractions
Some services need pre-authorization from the plan, and a few are not covered at all. We will confirm what applies to your treatment before we begin.
Co-payments
Depending on your adjusted family net income, you may pay a share of the plan’s established fee for each covered service.
- Under $70,000
- No co-payment
- $70,000 – $79,999
- 40% co-payment
- $80,000 – $89,999
- 60% co-payment
Where our fee is higher than the plan’s established fee, the difference may also be yours to pay. We will always tell you in advance.
