What it is
Over-the-counter kits are a blunt instrument: a one-size tray, an unknown gel strength and no idea whether the dark tooth at the front is stained or dying.
We check first that the teeth and gums are healthy and that the discolouration is what you think it is — a single dark tooth is often a nerve problem rather than a staining one, and bleaching it would achieve nothing. Then we photograph your starting shade so the change can be judged honestly.
Custom trays are made from a scan, which keeps the gel on the enamel and off the gums. Strength is matched to your sensitivity and adjusted as you go, and you keep the trays afterwards so a top-up costs a tube of gel rather than a fresh course.

Good To Know
- Will whitening damage my enamel?
- Supervised whitening at controlled concentrations does not. Sensitivity during the course is common and temporary, and it is managed by adjusting strength and wear time.
- Will it whiten my crowns and fillings?
- No — porcelain and composite do not change shade. If they show when you smile, we plan to replace or reshade them after whitening so everything matches.
- How long does it last?
- Typically one to three years depending on coffee, tea, red wine and smoking. Keeping the trays means a top-up is a few nights rather than a fresh course.
