What it is
A missing tooth is not only a gap. The bone that held its root begins to resorb, neighbouring teeth drift into the space, and the bite quietly reorganises itself around the absence.
An implant replaces the root as well as the crown, which is why it holds the bone in place where a bridge or denture cannot. Placement is planned from a 3D scan and carried out through a guide made to that plan, so the position is decided at a screen rather than judged in the moment.
Healing usually takes three to four months while the bone integrates, with a temporary tooth in place if the gap shows. The final tooth is scanned, made and fitted to match the teeth beside it, then put on a maintenance interval — implants do not decay, and that is precisely why the gum around them needs watching.

Good To Know
- Is placing an implant painful?
- The placement is done under local anaesthetic and is generally more comfortable than an extraction. Most people manage the days afterwards on ordinary painkillers.
- How long do implants last?
- Decades, on the evidence — but only with the gum care to match. They do not decay, and that is exactly why the gum around them needs watching.
- Am I too old for an implant?
- Age is rarely the deciding factor. Bone volume, gum health, smoking and certain medications matter far more, and all of them are assessed before we recommend anything.
